Music

The music program at the Renaissance School is designed to nurture students in learning their instrument, music history and theory. The Music I class introduces students to all periods of music from Medieval to Modern with a focus on 20th century. Students also learn their preferred instrument including reading music and technique. The second half of the year is spent on music theory which includes reading music, harmony, scales, and rhythm. The Music II class expands on what is learned in the Music I class.

The Music III/IV class is an elective for juniors and seniors, some of whom plan on continuing musical study after high school. These classes are usually smaller and they continue to build on previously learned topics, with a focus on improvisation. Upper class music students frequently choose a music-related topic for the Renaissance Independent Study Program and music faculty work in an advisory role. Renaissance students who plan to pursue music programs in college may choose an “arts emphasis” curriculum which allows increased schedule time for audition preparation and reduced requirements in the humanities and sciences.

Consistent with the Renaissance interdisciplinary mission, music students have written and performed music for theater productions. In the fall of 2009, they participated in “Spirit Walk”, performing alongside theater students over 45 times during this traditional weekend of historical tours, sponsored by the Charlottesville Albemarle Historical Society.
